Roberta's Marketing Resolutions: it's never too late to make 'em!
By Roberta Guise, MBA

So here we are into the new year already, and I'm sure you've got it in your head that this will be the year to do all those marketing activities you had every intention of getting to last year, but life got in the way and nothing got done.

To make it nice and easy for you this time around, I've put together a checklist of my top 15 marketing to-dos. Like so many garden plants, these items are perennials. Which means that they'll always be there. Get my drift?

Now, say after me, I will

  1. Write a marketing action plan.

  2. Update my database; hire the tech guru if I need help doing it.

  3. Stay in touch with people in the database by sending a newsletter or other valuable content they can use.

  4. Stay in regular contact with former clients, preferably by phone.

  5. Ask for referrals, even if my business is booming.

  6. Attend all meetings of professional organizations I’ve invested in, regardless of the program.

  7. Write one article every quarter, or better still, every month, and distribute to clients, prospects and publications for maximum visibility.
       (a) Update my Web site and optimize it for search engines.
       (b) Submit my articles to important Web sites, to bring more traffic
to my site and to get ranked higher in the search engines.

  8. Reassess the publications I subscribe to.

  9. Subscribe to the local paper, one national paper, and at least one business publication.

  10. Make a daily habit of reading the news.

  11. Clip articles that I think my clients should have and send to them (or send them the URL).

  12. Get Google’s News Alerts for my clients’ industries delivered free to my in-box.

  13. Discuss with clients as relevant.

  14. Develop products (CDs, DVDs, e-books, booklets, books) and sell them.

  15. Get name in print (quoted, profile, etc.) at least three times in ‘06.

Bonus Resolution
Implement the marketing action plan I created in resolution #1.

See you next year, same time and place. OK?
