Our relationship goes back to the first days of HCE, when Roberta interviewed me and several clients to develop a comprehensive marketing strategy. Eve Hinman, a civil engineer who designs buildings to be safe from terrorist attacks and accidental explosions, owns this boutique engineering firm. She consults to the government on safe design for embassies, courthouses, and federal and state buildings, and to private industry for high profile and landmark buildings.

When I started advising Eve on ways to market her budding engineering consulting practice and how to position herself to successfully compete with the big East Coast firms, she was doing it solo, in her living room. Now, with a total staff of eleven — and growing — in San Francisco’s South of Market district and New York Metro area, Hinman Consulting Engineers has grown to be recognized as the leading blast design expert in the Western U.S. and Hawaii.

Our work together
I conducted a 360-degree business review, strategic marketing planning, customer survey, and successfully place Eve Hinman and other staff in interviews as experts on TV, radio and in print media. I am providing guidance over the company’s marketing strategy. I oversee and provide creative direction on all promotional materials, such as a corporate brochure, project write-ups, business card and letterhead system, new office announcement and sales letters. I worked with to Eve create her company Web site and also wrote the content for the site.

Some marketing projects require instant bolts of creativity. Tom Taormina, an expert in business management systems and one of the engineers in Mission Control who helped in the effort to rescue the Apollo 13 spacecraft, came to me to get reviews of his 6th book on quality and the international quality standard ISO 9000. Problem was, none of the publications on quality published book reviews. So while I had each editor’s ear, I pitched and they accepted articles that Tom would write. I had found, on-the-fly, a deep connecting thread running through Tom’s Apollo 13 experience, the 9-11 attacks, and the Enron debacle.

Our work together
I wrote his press kit, putting special emphasis on his personal biography. Through numerous question and answer sessions with Tom and helping him write and edit variations of his story, I guided him to writing and publishing about six articles, all of which were published. He even got paid for one.

Our work together

Our work together

I performed a 360-degree business review to determine the strengths, challenges and opportunities of the company, and crafted a marketing action plan which I then helped implement. I worked with Erik to develop his Web site strategy and create the site, and wrote the content. I successfully placed both son and father in local media stories, as experts and featuring a couple of their projects. I also worked with Erik to develop other promotions for the business.
